Just like Galveston, at one time La Porte was home to a water front amusement, and entertainment park. Actually, when it was known as Sylvan Grove back in the 1920s and 30s, the city was so popular that many celebrities from around the United States vacationed, and performed there. As World War II came into existence, gas rationing curtailed family trips to this tourist attraction, and the constant erosion of the beach made it less and less popular.
