If you are finding it entirely too frustrating to sell your Inner Loop Houston home, or if you simply don’t want to take a big hit regarding your potential profit (or lack thereof) then you may have considered renting your home until the market improves.

Many Houstonians, given the state of the real estate market and the tumbling home prices, have opted to rent out their Houston homes instead of sell them at a loss. For some individuals, this may be the perfect solution to a less-than-perfect real estate market; for others, it may simply prove too difficult.
So, how you do you know whether renting is right for you? You may begin by asking yourself the following questions:
- Are you prepared to become a landlord? For many individuals with busy lifestyles, acting as a landlord is simply out of the question. For others who move far away, acting as a landlord is also simply impossible.
- If you are not prepared to become a landlord, are you in the financial position to pay someone else to take on this roll? If you can’t act as a landlord – or if you simply don’t want to – you will need to pay a property management company to act on your behalf; and this can take away from your monthly rental income. The bottom line, however, is that you will need someone to take care of the property, to collect rent, and to deal with issues regarding the home, even if it is at 2:00AM.
- Are you prepared to deal with tenants? Most tenants are responsible and considerate; however, there are always those tenants that may mark up the walls, damage the floors or pay late. All of these issues can be quite irritating as a landlord, but they are all to be expected. If your home has valuable flooring, high-end appliances or pricey fixtures, for example, you may be hesitant to invite renters in your home.
- Are you prepared to take a loss? For many homeowners with existing mortgages, renting out your home for the same amount as your monthly mortgage payment is simply not realistic. You must therefore be prepared to take a loss on a monthly basis.
